Safety briefing: PFDs, emergency procedures, boarding procedures, boat familiarization
Essential terminology: Parts of the boat, basic sailing terms
Handling under power: Steering, maneuvering in close quarters, leaving and returning to the dock.
Afternoon: (sailing)
Raising mainsail and headsail.
Reefing.
Understanding helming under sail.
Points of sail discussion and review.
Morning:
Start sailing with an understanding the wind: Wind direction, true vs. apparent wind
Points of sail: Close-hauled, beam reach, broad reach, running
Sail theory: Lift, drag, balance, trim, and how sails work
Afternoon:
Sail trim: Adjusting sails for different points of sail
Maneuvering through the wind with tacks and gybes.
Sailing to specific point.
Crew overboard procedures.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The ASA 101 is the perfect way to start sailing. This basic Keelboat Sailing certification is your passport to the world of sailing! It's an internationally recognized credential that signifies you have the essential knowledge and skills to skipper a sailboat up to 25 feet in length in familiar waters.
You should have successfully completed ASA 101, Basic Keelboat Sailing, and ASA 103, Basic Coastal Cruising, or have equivalent sailing experience. If you have not taken ASA 101 or ASA 103, please contact us so we can help determine the best path.
This course covers a comprehensive range of skills, including:
- Basic sailing terminology and boat parts
- Understanding wind and points of sail
- Hoisting, lowering, and trimming sails
- Steering and maneuvering the boat
- Tacking and gybing
- Essential knots
- Collision avoidance
- Man overboard procedures
- Basic navigation rules
Not at all! This course is designed for complete beginners. Our experienced instructors will guide you through every step, ensuring you gain the knowledge and confidence to sail safely and enjoyably.
We have created a list to help. THINGS TO BRING.
We will do our best to sail as much as possible. However, safety is our priority. If conditions are unsuitable for sailing, we will conduct theory sessions and practical exercises on land or adjust the itinerary accordingly.
We keep our class sizes small to ensure personalized instruction and ample hands-on experience. Typically, you will start sailing with no more than 4 students per boat.
You will start sailing on one of our monohulls or catamans. You can have a look at our fleet here.
