Liveaboard Australia Sailing School – Basic Cruise and Learn

The Sunshine Coast is a fantastic place to learn to sail in Australia. Set sail on an adventure to old shipwrecks, sail up the river to Brisbane, or go to the many islands for a breathtaking evening. This unique Learn & Cruise course combines expert instruction with hands-on experience, allowing you to discover the magic of sailing while exploring one of the world's most stunning cruising grounds.

The Basic Liveaboard Sailing School course includes: Basic Keelboat (ASA 101) and Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA 103). We make sure to allow plenty of time to explore above the water and below.

Itinerary

  • Morning/Afternoon: Arrive on the Sunshine Coast. Settle in, meet your instructor and crew. Enjoy a welcome drink and get acquainted with the boat.
  • Orientation Sail: A short introductory sail to get a feel for the boat and the Coral Sea waters.
  • Late Afternoon: Basic sailing theory: wind, points of sail, essential terminology. Keep it concise and focused on immediate application.

Hands-On Practice: Steering, sail trim, basic maneuvers (tacking, gybing). End the day with a sense of accomplishment.

  • Morning: Sail to a nearby island and focus on refining basic sailing skills.
  • Instructor Feedback: Personalized guidance on sail trim, boat handling, and maneuvering in different conditions.
  • Afternoon: Snorkeling, swimming, or relaxing on the beach. Enjoy the beauty of the East Coast.
  • Informal Learning: Discuss sailing observations and experiences while enjoying the island paradise.

Evening: Dinner onboard. Casual conversation about sailing techniques and challenges.

  • Morning: Introduction to coastal navigation: charts, compass, basic plotting. Keep it practical, relating chart symbols to real-world features.
  • Daytime Navigation: Sail to a new location using basic navigation techniques. Practice taking bearings and estimating distances.
  • Afternoon: Anchor in a secluded bay. More advanced maneuvering practice (e.g., picking up a mooring buoy).

Night Sailing Introduction: After sunset, a short night sail to observe navigation lights and practice basic night sailing techniques.

  • Morning: Basic weather interpretation: understanding wind patterns, clouds, and local forecasts.
  • Practical Application: Discuss how weather affects sailing decisions and route planning.
  • Afternoon: Anchoring in different locations and conditions (e.g., sand, coral, varying depths). Practice setting and retrieving the anchor.

Teamwork: Work together to choose an anchorage, assess conditions, and execute anchoring maneuvers.

  • Morning: Focus on cruising skills: docking, mooring, basic boat systems, safety equipment.
  • Hands-On Learning: Practice docking in different scenarios, perform engine checks, and learn about essential boat maintenance.
  • Afternoon: Sail to a new island with a longer passage. Enjoy exploring the island, hiking, or simply relaxing on the beach.

What do I need to bring?

Where do I park?

There is overnight parking on the street at the end of the spit. 

Do we stay on the boat for the entire 6-days?

Yes, the boat is available to stay on for all 5 nights. There is an option on the first night of staying ashore. If you would like to do that, please let us know so we can coordinate.

Where do we sail?

Primarily in the Moreton Bay region.  Depending on winds and weather, we will find places to sail and have an adventure.  There are so many amazing things to do and see, and there is no shortage of beautiful skies and beaches.

Is there wifi on the boat?

No, there is not wifi on the boat; however, you will have access to at least 4g for most of the journey.

Can I drink alcohol

Yes, but you must bring your own as we are not allowed to serve you alcohol.  Please no red wine, as it stains the gel coat if dropped.

I have dietary requirements do you accomodate those?

You will receive a form to fill out with your dietary requirements.  We can cater to most needs, and we will reach out if we have any concerns.  If you would like to bring along your own snacks and some food, feel free to do so.  Please keep in mind that there is very limited cold storage.
